Map Design Competition and GIS Day, 2022

NGES aims to encourage mappers from various professional backgrounds to participate in the open mapping competition. With prizes for winners and strong digital outreach for all participants, the competition saw excellent engagement.

The objective of this program was to build awareness about the potential applications of OpenStreetMap (OSM) datasets for map-making.

A panel of judges from diverse backgrounds was selected, including:

  • Mr. Suresh Man Shrestha, Cartography Expert

  • Mr. Biplob Rakhal, GIS Expert, WFP Nepal

  • Mr. Amrit Karmacharya, Survey Officer, Survey Department

  • Mr. Can Unen, Trainer, Open Mapping Hub – Asia Pacific

This event was organized on the occasion of World GIS Day 2022.

Five winners – first, second, third, best cartography, and public choice map – were awarded and declared winners in their respective categories out of 44 maps submitted by 40 individuals. Additionally, the slogan competition winner was also awarded. For more details and to review the winners and submissions, please see this Facebook post.

Similarly, GIS Day was celebrated by NGES at the Survey Department, Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation (MoLCPA), inviting the Director General and other distinguished guests on the same day.
